EPFO: About EDLI Scheme
📋 What is EDLI?▶
EDLI (Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme)
As per Section 6C of the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952,
the Central Government may frame a scheme called the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme,
under which life insurance benefits shall be provided to employees linked to their provident fund deposits
in case of death while in service.
💰 Maximum Coverage▶
Up to ₹7 lakh insurance benefit, calculated based on average EPF balance over the preceding 12 months.
✅ Eligibility▶
All EPF members are automatically covered. No separate enrollment or medical examination required.
💳 Premium▶
Employer contributes 0.5% of wages (ceiling: ₹15,000). Employees pay nothing.
🧮 Calculation Formula▶
Average EPF balance (last 12 months) + 50% of average balance, subject to maximum of ₹7 lakh.
2️⃣ Calculate 12-month Average EPF Balance
Total of last 12 months = ₹38,45,000
Average Balance = 38,45,000 ÷ 12 = ₹3,20,417
3️⃣ Calculate 50% of Average EPF Balance
50% = 3,20,417 × 0.50 = ₹1,60,208.50
4️⃣ EDLI Payable Amount
EDLI Benefit = 3,20,417 + 1,60,208.50 = ₹4,80,625.50
5️⃣ Check Maximum Limit (₹7,00,000)
Final EDLI Benefit = ₹4,80,626 (within limit)
✅ Final EDLI Benefit Payable: ₹4,80,626
⭐ Another Quick Scenario (When benefit exceeds limit)
Average EPF = ₹5,00,000
50% = ₹2,50,000
Total = ₹7,50,000
Since limit is ₹7,00,000:
Final EDLI Benefit = ₹7,00,000
